New BiVent ET Tube delivers significant benefits to Patients and Healthcare Providers

A novel device to successfully isolate one lung from the other during thoracic surgery whilst improving patient safety is now available to NHS Trusts and other healthcare providers throughout the UK and worldwide.

The Papworth BiVent Endotracheal Tube, which has been created by Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Sunit Ghosh who works at Papworth Hospital, allows ventilation to one lung to be stopped whilst maintaining ventilation of the other.

The new design offers a number of significant benefits: it is easier and quicker to pass through the larynx and position correctly, its bifurcated tip design allows the tube to sit on the carina in a stable position and the bronchus blocker can be rapidly passed through either lumen directly into the bronchus, considerably reducing the time from intubation to lung isolation.

The Tube has been developed with the help of Health Enterprise East (HEE), the NHS Innovation Hub for the East of England. Public Sector Research Exploitation (PSRE) funding has enabled HEE to fund patent protection, prototype development, a manikin study and a cadaver study of the BiVent Tube. Using this evidence base, HEE exclusively licensed the intellectual property rights to the company P3 Medical Ltd which then obtained regulatory approval in July 2009 to market the device.

Cost-effectiveness is another advantage. The cost of the BiVent ET Tube is around £60, compared to its most widely used comparator at around £130. This means that it can save the NHS and other healthcare providers £70 per procedure. A clinical trial of the BiVent Tube is about to commence at Papworth which will provide further data on the benefits of this exciting innovation.

Dr Alistair Grant, Senior Research & Development Manager at Papworth said: “Approximately 500,000 surgical procedures requiring lung isolation are carried out each year and this number is likely to increase with the growing demand for thoracic surgery. The successful development of the Papworth BiVent ET Tube and commercialisation through P3 Medical Ltd will make a significant difference to the future of thoracic surgery, both in terms of patient safety and cost-savings. This further enhances the established reputation of our Trust for patient-focused innovation, research and development.”

As well as delivering enhanced benefits in general thoracic procedures on the lungs and pleura, the BiVent ET Tube also has benefits in areas where rapid lung isolation is needed (in Accident & Emergency or armed forces settings) where there is no simple satisfactory device that can be used for quick lung isolation.
